Sustainable Construction Practices and Life Cycle Cost Analysis of Commercial Buildings in Nigeria
Abstract
The global construction industry accounts for approximately 39% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. This paper examines the adoption of sustainable construction practices and their long-term impact on building life cycle costs among commercial buildings in Nigeria. Case study analysis of 15 commercial buildings in Lagos and Abuja was undertaken, combining field assessments with financial cost modelling. Buildings incorporating passive solar design, rainwater harvesting, and solar photovoltaic panels demonstrated a life cycle cost reduction of 28–35% over a 30-year period compared to conventional counterparts. The paper argues that upfront investment in green technologies yields significant financial returns and environmental benefits, and makes policy recommendations for incentivising sustainable construction in Nigeria.
