Construction Workforce Skills Gap and Training Needs in the Nigerian Building Industry

Abstract

A skilled construction workforce is a prerequisite for quality infrastructure delivery. This paper assesses the skills gap and training needs of the construction workforce in the Nigerian building industry. Data were gathered through a structured survey of 180 site operatives, 45 foremen, and 30 training institutions. Skills proficiency was rated across ten trade categories using a competency assessment matrix. Significant deficiencies were found in welding, plumbing, and electrical installation trades. Only 34% of operatives had received any formal trade training, with most relying on informal apprenticeships. The paper recommends a national construction skills certification programme, strengthened vocational training infrastructure, and mandatory continuous professional development for registered construction workers.
